Dear Minister,
I am most concerned that our province continues to extend the life of nuclear reactors who are past their 'best by' dates. We must learn from Fukushimi and the ongoing problems in Japan.
Please close all nuclear reactors, phase them out, invest our tax dollars in sustainable power for this.
The cost is horrendous to the tax payer for these power stations and we will be burdening future generations with debt. The cost will be more horrendous if there is an accident and not just in dollars but in human suffering.
Also, what happens in the event of a nuclear disaster in Ontario. The whole province will suffer as the water will be more contaminated than it already is and the whole of the GTA and beyond will be in crisis.
Ontario must commit to best practices for nuclear emergency response planning and preparedness. Why not use similar plans being put into place in Switzerland? These plans should be reviewed and improved regularly and transparently. Everyone needs to be aware of safety strategies.
Evacuation zones must be part of the plan and Ontario should look to match real-world experience and best practices set by other countries such as Switzerland.
