As a forester, I am slightly concerned by the proposed change. I believe the new proposal has potential to result in an increase in safety issues on forest access roads.
Placing bait 30m from a road right-of-way will increase the potential for vehicle-wildlife encounters which poses a risk to all users of public forest access roads.
Bringing bears closer to traffic with the promise of food will reduce their fear of humans and vehicles which also poses a great risk to the various users of forest access roads. Over time, this stands to result in danger to those who rely on our forests for employment or recreation.
As such, I would be in favour of leaving the regulation unchanged.
