As a single motorcycle rider that commutes from Hamilton to Mississauga, allowing me to use the HOV lane will exceptionally increase the safety of my commute. I sometimes fear for my life during rush hour, I’ve had many close calls being cut off or almost rear ended. Having the option of using the HOV lane that often has less stop and go traffic will make me feel safer getting to work. Furthermore, having the HOV lane as an option will reduce the chances of sitting in traffic and the motorcycle and/or rider overheating in summer.
Aside from safety, motorcycles already have a much smaller carbon footprint than cars - regardless if carrying a single rider or a passenger. So I firmly believe allowing single riders to use the HOV lane is the logical next step in order to reduce pollution, traffic volume and congestion. The US already allows this and we are behind the times. If this law passes, I will definitely choose taking my motorcycle over my car to get to work and I know many others would choose the same.
