I don’t think it is possible to comment on this agreement. When Right Honourable Justin Trudeau came into office, he committed to a nation to nation relationship with Canada’s Indigenous Peoples. Although I recognize there was consultation (as per the preamble), and there is reference to consultation within the document, it is not appropriate to make this agreement with the Federal government and another government within Canada (Ontario), and for it to not include as well the Indigenous Nations native to the territory being discussed. This needs to be between Ontario, Canada, and any Indigenous nations NATIVE TO or currently in the Great Lakes region. I also believe this needs to include nations that fall on the US side of the border, in recognition of the fact that they are more their own nation than US.
This type of agreement is a chance to be true to our word and recognize these nations as nations with us. This promise has been nothing but lip service, so let’s please start here.
