The forest industry is extremely important to this region. The community in which I live has not been able to retain the younger people because of the uncertainties for economic development and the opportunities for employment that follow.
Forests are managed and operations are conducted under the guidance and direction of the Crown Forest Sustainability Act. This Act and the forest management planning process takes into account the habitat needs for species at risk in this region, and develops operational prescriptions for it's protection. Locally collected data assists in the development of some of these prescriptions.
This proposed 2 year extension is critical to the continued forestry operations in the upcoming years. More science needs to be done and data collected.
To properly develop a direction for the future, not only does more research need to be carried out, all of the affected parties need to have a role. The municipalities, first nation communities and industries need to be part of the process.
I fully support the proposed extension and urge the Provincial Government act quickly.
