Water is a fundamental basis for healthy ecosystems and communities. I urge the Ontario government to provide maximum protection for all surface and underground water features in Southern Ontario.
This includes boundaries around and over water features that provide water filtering and storage functions, such as all the remaining wetlands and woodlands in Southern Ontario.
In many places we have lost the ecosystem services that keep our water abundant and clean. Let us move forward to save what remains and make long term plans to restore at least some of what has been lost.
If our focus is re-directed to maintaining and restoring the basic ecosystem functions required to keep the ecosystem healthy, we can begin to build sustainable communities on that sturdy base.
Any maintained and restored natural habitat will also help to mitigate the consequences of human-induced climate change, and will therefore serve a dual purpose.
