I am very encouraged to see this proposal and fully endorse it. We need to reduce red tape and duplicative legislation. Forest management on Crown land under the CFSA provides long term sustainability of our forested ecosystems for all forest dwelling species - currently species at risk or not. We need to follow this proposal with revised policy on species at risk protection measures that are often excessive, unworkable and do not address the real threats to the species in question. This policy should be balanced with the risk to the species and the economic health of local and regional communities.
This is an excellent first step and will remove the continuing lingering uncertainty of temporary exemptions or overly burdensome, uncertain and costly requirements under section 18 (having Forest Management Plans being an instrument of the ESA) and doubly true over requirements in section 17 (permits). This approach is long overdue and will recognize the superior benefits of the CFSA in providing long term habitat and species conservation protection across Crown land in the province.
