I work as a forest ecologist in NW Ontario. I fully support ERO #019-1020 to permanently ensure the best protection for species at risk in Ontario’s Crown Forests under the CFSA. As a forest ecologist, I value not only species at risk, but also all of the other environmental, economic and social benefits the forest brings. The CFSA, and the forest management plans produced balance many forest values, including First Nation and Métis values, not just species at risk – this social, economic, as well as environmental balance is a critical benefit to sustainability of our Crown Forests and is accomplished through the CFSA.

My household is solely provided for working in the forest industry. I want to stay employed after July 1st 2020; approval of this proposal is required for me to be able to do that. Our communities in NW Ontario, and though central and NE Ontario, need the economic certainty this proposal brings to the forest industry.

I expect the finalized language related to this proposal to not contain additional restrictions or requirements beyond what is already contained the CFSA or O. Reg. 242/08; and an efficient approval process is maintained.

Also, with further improvements to forest management guides, climate change can be considered that will benefit not just species at risk, but the entire forest ecosystem. The government should consider climate change in the upcoming reviews of the forest management guides and manuals. It is possible to consider climate change through the CFSA; where under the ESA that is not possible with the static, moment in time approach that act has.

There is no time to delay with July 1st so close; I ask that this proposal be approved and finalized as soon as possible.
