I believe the proposed Ontario Forest Sector Strategy draft is not based on sound forestry science.
The streamlining and deregulation recommended in this draft would suggest it was being promoted by the political ambitions of the existing conservative MPP to retain public support for re election.

Obviously, public consultations in rural Ontario where many workers are employed in the forestry sector would support any unfettered access to crown resources. But it is short sighted and sets a dangerous president.

It is formulated on many myths still being circulated in the industrial forestry sector that trees can be grown like an agricultural crop and have historically been managed on a sustainable yield bases . This is not true.

The rotation period has consistently gone from 100 years to 80 and down to 60 years in many jurisdictions. The quality and quantity of wood products have declined as younger trees are hauled from the forest.

The effects of climate change, non native diseases an exploding deer population (which retards forest regeneration) and a history of over- harvesting with excessively large machinery has placed our forests under excessive stress. This deraft strategy just exacerbates an already dire situation in our forests. It should not gain approval.
