The use of SO2 is imperative for gold mining companies to operate cyanide destruction circuits to ensure cyanide levels in tailings dams and associated seepage containment facilities are reduced to concentrations that will not impact receiving environments downstream. There are a number of gold mining companies in northern Ontario including but not limited to Goldcorp, Alamos, Tahoe Resources and Detour Gold that operate cyanide destruction plants utilizing SO2 as a catalyst for the destruction reaction. The proposed changes as they stand would create a situation where standard operation of the cyanide destruction plants would be non-compliant with air quality regulations.
