I have concerns about the traffic increase as a result of this facility. I see that the traffic study was focused on 4 intersections near the facility. I'd like to see what impacts this will have further 'upstream' as any truck traffic arriving/departing will likely be coming from the 401 through two potential routes.
I live near Port Union road, which from my understanding, will be one of the routes trucks will take to the highway. Port Union Road is a single lane northbound, already has significant traffic delays especially in the afternoon hours as a result of GO train arrivals (obviously decreased at the moment due to Covid).
I'm also an avid recreational cyclist. My main route to leave the city is north on Port Union Road towards the zoo. The idea of MANY trucks competing with me for road space as they try to enter the highway is frankly terrifying.
A couple concerns:
-How will truck traffic increase existing delays on Port Union Road.
-Will this factor in slow acceleration of fully-loaded trucks up the hill towards Island road
-Without cycling infrastructure on Port Union Road, what precautions can take place to ensure cyclist safety as they leave the neighbourhood over the 401 on Port Union Road.
I have attached a Strava Heatmap of cycling activity in the area. You can clearly see that Port Union Road over the 401 is one of the only ways north, and a VERY popular cycling route.
Large trucks are significantly more dangerous to cyclists than cars and other vehicle types. Here's a link to a paper on truck/cyclist risks: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s12544-019-0371-7 and a concerning excerpt: "The mere presence of trucks has been shown to contribute to higher accident risk for cyclists [5, 6] and truck-bicycle accidents usually have more severe consequences for the cyclists involved than any other types of accidents [7,8,9,10]; consequently, trucks are overrepresented in fatal bicycle accidents [11]."
