I strongly object to the proposal to exempt projects or activities related to land claim settlement or other agreements with Indigenous communities from the Environmental Assessment Act.
I strongly object to segregating Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples' needs and opinions when undertaking an Environmental Assessment.
Environmental Assessments are wholistic and inclusive investigations of the likely impact of a proposed development on all facets of life-- the impact on the air, the water, the land, the plants, the animals, the social fabric, etc.
Indigenous and non-Indigenous people breathe the same air, share the same land. Ecosystems don't stop and end at territorial boundaries.
Let's imagine a development at Paris that will change the flow of the Grand River. Surely the environmental assessment should look at impacts all the way downstream, not just up to the northern edge of disputed territory at Caledonia, and then starting again at its southern edge. That makes no sense at all.
