It is unconscionable to take any living creature from its natural environment and, in effect, weaponize it for the purpose of human sport. To call such a captive creature a hunting companion is to misrepresent the nature of the falcon-falconer relationship. The falcon is not a companion. It is a weapon to be used whenever the falconer deems it to be desirable. The falcon has control over neither its situation nor its destiny. It is likely to be kept in a cage when it is not “useful”. Furthermore, a tradition’s longevity neither justifies its continuation nor determines its morality. Consider that slavery too was once a “long standing” tradition.
