I support extending the moratorium on water bottling permits to April, 2021. Furthermore, I oppose the approval of any new or expanded water bottling permits in the Province of Ontario in perpetuity. Our aquifers are community resources which should be preserved for municipal water extraction and distribution to tax-paying residents of the local communities in which they occur, and should not be sold to private sector companies to make massive profits while depleting these precious water resources and contributing to plastic pollution through bottling with single use plastic bottles. The amount being charged these companies for taking public resources is laughably low, and amounts to lining the pockets of rich corporations and their shareholders at the expense of average Ontarians. We got along quite well without bottled water in the past, and can again. Consumers have been brainwashed into thinking this water is somehow better than tap water, when in fact regulatory oversight of water bottling facilities is less stringent than municipal water processing operations. It is time to put a stop to this environmentally destructive industry.
