I am commenting to advocate for the new proposed wild take legislation. My partner is an avid falconer and has been doing it for about 20yrs. The current lottery system does not promote an inclusive environment for falconry and there is no scientific evidence to promote the need for a select few birds being trapped from the wild. The intent of trapping first year birds only is that falconers help to potentially save the approx 70% of passage birds that die in their first year.
Raising the numbers of birds that licensed falconers in Ontario can take from the wild from 25 to the possible 75-100 taken again has no scientific negative effect on populations. The current populations of raptors that can be trapped are healthy and are able to sustain the impacts that the new proposal.
Again, I advocate for the new proposal and agree with the intentions of the ministry.
