An automatic exemption does not sufficiently protect the rights of Indigenous peoples who are constitutionally entitled to consultation.
Also, exemptions should be driven by science. There should not be discretion available to grant an exemption for political expediency.
The province should also take this opportunity to tighten regulations to make it more difficult to pollute or damage the environment. This is golden opportunity to reduce the amount of permissible harm to the environment.
