Mining projects and their related infrastructure are proven to impact the environment and the health of any humans or animals near them. All mining projects and major mine-related infrastructure (e.g. smelters, tailings ponds, etc.), and especially open-pit mines, should be subject to comprehensive environmental assessment. This is due to their enormous size, the potential risks to the environment and to human health, the liabilities associated with the long-term management and storage of mining waste, and more.
The public needs the opportunity to evaluate the environmental impacts of projects that impact them, and the public (including scientists, ecologists, biologists, and concerned citizens) need the opportunity to comment and intervene in the approval process for these projects.
