Smelters absolutely should undergo an EA before they are approved. The people who live around a smelter have the right to know what's potentially endangering the water, soil, and air around them.
In addition, the idea of putting a smelter on one of the largest freshbodies of water in the world, Lake Superior, is irresponsible. The potential for disruption of the ecosystem and death of human and animal life is too great.
The people of Sault Ste Marie are vehemently opposed to this smelter, which was commited to by our city and council without proper consultation. I trust the provincial and federal government will look out for the best interest of the health of the people, not the health of big business, and commit to a thorough EA for smelters.
