I whole heartedly disagree with this exemption for the health and wellbeing of local residents. Our region is notorious for high cancer rates that can be directly attributed to the Steel mill in Sault Ste. Marie. These exemptions were likely at one time a short term measure but are being abused by local industry to maintain substandard processes which pollute the water we drink and air we breathe. This is unacceptable and needs to stop. The steel industry in the Sault has given little back to this community other than a living wage for many residents, while contributing to their ill health and polluting our local eco system. It's time the profits get turned into real progress like reinvesting in emission controls and better processing to make the community a safer place for everyone to live a healthy life.
From a concerned resident and parent.
