Benzene is a known carcinogen. The current Algoma Steel site-specific standard for benzene is five times the ministry’s benzene air standard. The fact that substantive progress has not been made on meeting provincial standards and the people of Sault Ste.

1. Extending the site-specific standard for both particulates and benzene does not follow the regulation’s principle of continuous improvement.

Please do not extend compliance deadlines beyond one year, such as 2021. Industry has known these standards for years or plan and implement. Given the pandemic has disrupted 2020, annexation of one year on the original compliance date is reasonable.

An extension will go through as it has for years and it’s not because goals are being met. It’s because money is more important then lives. The lives of Sault Ste. Marie are and will continue to paid for these choices.
First off the ERO number is hidden by writing over it! My best guess is that number is ERO 019-2301.
I am concerned about extending the expiry dates of site specific standards for suspended particulate matter and benzene for Algoma Steel.
