Years ago—- 20 likely, my young child had a report to present on the debate between keeping people employed vs environmental well being. For research we went to our Mnistry of the Environment office in Sault Ste. Marie. Perhaps it was called something else but I can tell you the location and the name of the person We spoke to. We discussed the Algoma Steel plant. The ‘government employee’ commented that “yes”, emission and pollution standards were in place but there were always allowances and altered timelines given to industry because expense of alterations was high. “ No”.... the Algoma Steel had not met the standards yet and “yes” they had been given approval to make small improvements over a much longer time. ....20 years ago....same wagon....

Our town’s residents have seen owners financially benefit and we have seen employment at this factory drop. My child’s paper written today could simply report:
“No! One doesn’t trump the other! Employment is not protected! Environment is not protected! Profit is protected.... profit for a very few at the expense of all else.

Such short sightedness is appalling. We wonder at the intelligence of anyone who doesn’t have the integrity to decrease pollution as quickly as possible respecting not just local people but all the people on our planet and the environment in which they too live. We are appalled! Still!

Permission is not granted for any extensions. Fix it or shut it down!!!! And.... pay back the government grants given for the success of this plant so the people of this country who paid for those grants can do their own environmental clean up arrangements! Any of this make sense ?

Thank you. I’m certain this is a difficult task for you to read such unhappy, disappointed responses to this on going environmental travesty. Your days must be long. Stay well !
