This proposal, allowing unfettered water taking by corporations and particularly during droughts, is absolute folly. I reside in rural Ontario, and depend on my well for all my personal water needs. The importance of having a safe, clean and dependable drinking water supply for my family cannot be overstated. What will my family do once the local aquifer has been drained by greedy corporations, who look only to see how much money they can make, in the short term? There are two private bottling companies in my township already taking millions of litres of water from the common aquifer, water my community and farmers depend on so much. To allow corporations to continue this practice, let alone taking the same quantities during droughts, is incredibly short sighted and an aberration of the community spirit. Nestles, one of the world's biggest water taker, has ruined communities around the world in their insatiable drive for profits. They have bought wells, drained them for profit, then decamped, leaving local communities with little or much diminished water quality. There are a host of other corporations in this business, all making obscene profits while draining our community aquifers. This is absolute madness.
When we look back in the coming years on how we allowed corporations to destroy our planet in the name of profit for a very few, the question will be, "how could they have allowed this destruction to happen?" We in Ontario need look no further than the policies of the Progressive Conservative government.
