Trying to live in an area surrounded by gravel pits is becoming harder and harder to enjoy. There is enough truck traffic, enough dust and contaminates in the air now and enough noise coming from two nearby pits to disrupt anyone's life.

It is getting to the point the so-called Moraine is just something compiled on paper but see no evidence of any protection compared to the any area outside the Moraine. As a kid, there was lots of wildlife-now it is rare to spot one of any species. Their breeding grounds are diminishing and they are having a limited chance of crossing the highways and roads with all the truck traffic. (60 trucks/hour is allowed at the pit on my road--multiply that by the 30 plus pits in this region of Durham) Where can any animal or bird live having a natural source of water with some quiet space?

I try to assist the migrating birds with birdboxes and water sources and feed but have noticed a steady decline in young ones getting hatched. With the amount of dirt that comes in from the trucks, there is a concern that this dirt and sand my be covering the eggs, preventing them from hatching properly.

The noise from the equipment and trucks are also scaring them away from using this area for raising their young. But it seems pits are expanding right across Ontario. The accumulated effect needs to be researched across the Moraine and the laws enforced.

Thank you.
