While in theory a forest biomass action plan seems viable as a substitute for environmentally harmful fossil fuels, the implementation of this plan is extremely contradictory and not completely transparent in its efforts. For instance, the burning of forest biomass such as wood pellets for energy is dirtier than coal, yet is marketed as clean energy. In addition, despite claims that biomass is sourced from mill by-products, increasing energy demands put old growth forests at the brunt of the forest biomass industry. If Ontario truly wants to support the emerging green economy and create new low carbon jobs, the focus should be on renewable energy. We must stop the extraction and use of finite natural resources as sources for our livelihood, whether that be fossil fuels or forests.
