I am a concerned renter in the area of this proposed site, while also having a degree in biology and knowing that the negative environmental impacts outweigh any potential gains to The Stool Bus. Every point that I outline below is going against proposal requirements.
There are numerous reasons that this proposal should be nixed including but not limited to:
- Runoff. The creeks on the property will get the runoff, which in turn will contaminate the water and even the well water of those who rely on it in the neighbourhood.
- Land and Waste Pollution. The amount of garbage and particulate that would end up in the creeks and waterways would be detrimental. It would kill animals, hurt humans, and be a disgusting eye sore. Things such as tampons, prophylactics, and non-biodegradable items would certainly be some of the pollutants present.
- Floodplain. The land is on a floodplain. That should already be enough of a red flag for this proposal to be axed. Putting untreated waste on a floodplain would contaminate the watershed and environment. My generation would have to then deal with the negative impact of this later and will pay for it greatly both financially AND environmentally. That is unfair.
- Stench, Vermin, and Litter. No one wants to live near stench. No one. My life and my neighbour’s lives would be severely impacted by the stench from that site. I would not be able to enjoy my environment, and people who visit me wouldn’t either. Not only that, but vermin would be attracted to the site, cause problems, and become a nuisance. Put yourselves in my shoes and my community’s shoes, would you want to live near this site? Would you want your children to deal with the aftermath of this site? Of course not.
- Diseases. Waste can contain diseases that can be transferred through contaminated water and use livestock and wild animals as a vector.
An important point to note is that, if you look across Canada, untreated waste disposal sites are BANNED in other provinces. It should be banned in Ontario also. We Canadians want to love our land, not feel burdened by it.
There are so many better ways to deal with human waste such as at a waste treatment plant, or even using it in the production of biogas that could be used for electricity or heat. Putting it on land is a waste of time and resources.
Most of all, my generation should not have to deal with the consequences of this ridiculous proposal. We would have to deal with garbage on land, contaminated water, environmental degradation, and high financial burden that it will create. We should not have to worry about that. We should worry about making the planet better from where we are now, we should not worry about going in reverse.
Please refer to the Provincial Policy Statement, 2020 on your own site (Ontario.ca) and also attached down below. Numerous statements would not be adhered to, which would mean that this proposal cannot and should not be passed.
If you need even MORE proof of why this proposal should be NIXED look at the attached article or Google "Human waste ends up on rural land" by the Globe and Mail (link: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/human-waste-ends-up-on-ru…)
