I am opposed to the amendments and to all exemptions. This is because the Endangered Species is (was) the only thing stopping the complete destruction of natural areas in Ontario. There are no other protections. For example there is no provincial leadership, laws or regulations to ensure we achieve 30% forest cover throughout the province. Chatham/Kent and Essex Counties have less than 4% forest remaining. The rest of Southwestern Ontario has barely 15% forest cover left. In the absence of any other effective measures, the Endangered Species Act and the habitat protections it affords is needed to stop the continued decline of forest cover in southern Ontario and particularly South Western Ontario.
