Hello.
I just wanted to write in and say that I oppose the new proposal of extending the rifle season in WMU 45.
First off, there are not the deer here now that were here even 10 years ago. It was nothing to take a drive in the evening and count well over 100 deer feeding in a field. Now, you are lucky to see a few dozen. There is already a lengthy bow season which more people are participating in. You always get road kill deer and now extending the season? That's not the answer.
One property owner will have multiple people from all over the province hunting on one tract of land. There are also a lot of Americans that come up to hunt.
I think you should get a handle on the actual deer population on St. Joe's before you extend the hunt. The deer check station - it should be mandatory as it measures the age, weight and the health of the deer. Most deer brought into the station, when it is open, are very young. You get the hunters that want to shoot the first thing they see regardless of size.
If anything, the season should be shortened, just the Monday to Friday at least until the population starts going up again.
It's like everything else, what's gonna happen when there aren't any deer left? I'm not opposed to hunting, but over hunting is a problem and not enough people respect the privilege.
