Bill 4, Cap and Trade Cancellation Act 2018 should be withdrawn.
In this age of climate change and species extinctions and endangerment due to the harm we are causing, cancelling this program without a better program to replace it is absolutely wrong.
Cancellation would destroy one of the fastest growing industries in the province -- while putting millions back into the pockets of oil and gas giants by the scrapping cap-and-trade program. Canada needs its largest province to be transitioning to renewable energy to help create a low-carbon economy that is key for mitigating the effects of climate change.
Cancellation would affect solar giants like Invenergy as well as small solar companies installing panels on schools, businesses and on reserves. And it’s not just solar companies -- construction and renovations companies would also be hit hard this. Over 6,000 people could be out of work if this act is approved. We need to save these renewable energy projects and protect green jobs across the province. There are also all of the projects, such as repairing public schools, that would not receive the funding generated by the Cap and Trade Program. These projects are desperately needed as are the jobs these projects have created.
Protecting green jobs is key to transitioning away from the fossil fuel industry that drives climate change. We need to act now to stop climate change before it's too late!
