At this time, the proposal to protect Woodland Caribou seems very weak.
This proposal requires existing habitat for Woodland Caribou to be excluded from forest harvest. At this time, it is terrible that proponents continue to cut trees in known habitat. This harvesting is on-going and needs to stop as soon as feasible.
For this proposal, the time line is too short. The approach of having a five year plan seems too short. Problems such as what exist with Woodland Caribou needs to have a long vision, such as 20 years.
For this proposal, it needs to include more extensive involvement with First Nation partners, as they are the true stewards of the land.
Use of captive breeding needs to be explored, as a means to increase the numbers of Woodland Caribou. I would support such an effort, as has been applied to Woodland Bison elsewhere in Canada.
The Woodland Caribou deserve as much assistance as possible in this time of need!
