While I appreciate the information, this posting was a long and bureaucratic read. It strikes me that one of the main challenges with caribou conservation and recovery is all the layers of government and agencies involved. Is the federal govt responsible? Provincial govt? Read more

I would like to see the requirement of restoration and protection of the natural areas in which the Caribou survive more distinctly spoken for and guaranteed in the main body of the agreement - the basis. It is referred to in the processes but it needs more grounding. Read more

I think your fire management plans with regards to letting the park’s fire burn naturally should be re-examined so that there is not so much habitat and wildlife loss. Last year, most of the Woodland Caribou Provincial Park went up in flames. Read more

While it is understood that protecting SAR, and in this case woodland caribou, is an important goal in Ontario and elsewhere, we need to ensure that we do not have blinders on and require actions and processes that are in well in excess of the benefits that they are likely to produce. Read more

- The draft agreement says the government has a “robust” system of laws to protect caribou, but this glosses over the fact that the forest industry is exempt from the Endangered Species Act. Logging is EXEMPT from recovery measures for at-risk forest-dwelling creatures that live in the boreal. Read more

Boreal Caribou are a keystone species whose continued existence signals that their Boreal forest habitat is healthy and self-sustaining. Their habitat must be protected if the Ontario government is to show leadership in fighting climate change and biodiversity loss. Read more
