One of the most important needs is affordable housing for low to middle income earners. Our community is losing families because they do not have proper affordable housing. A new rent assessment tool is needed also. At present they base it on your gross income which is not your take home pay, nor do they take into consideration the number of children you have. This format may have worked in the past for Ontario Works clients but it does not work for the low to middle income working families.
Since DNSSAB is also overseeing housing they must realize that their single clients can’t afford a place to live. A single person may get $650 to $720 a month. How to do even find a place with that little income let alone eat.
Last but not least STOP DOING SURVEYS! We know what needs to be done let’s give people more portable subsidies is small communities such as Mattawa. This way people can find a place that is suitable the landlord receives rent from the subsidy and the tenants portion which then becomes affordable. This keeps landlords honest and places properly maintained. This would fill the void while more housing units were being built.
Sincerely,
Councillor Laura Ross
Corporation of the Town of Mattawa
