As a farmer and landowner in rural Ontario, and as a parent watching my children struggle with little to no hope of entering the housing market at todays valuations, even though they are hardworking and have good jobs, the easy solution to the problem would be for them to build their own house on my land which they could afford. The Municipality would benefit by receiving property taxes on the property. The problem is that lot severences are all but impossible to get approved. Landowners who provide lots for their children do so knowing their children want to remain close to them, helping them as they get older, will not sell out and move but rather will stay there long term as they do not want to move away from the country-side they grew up in and call home. From what I've witnessed in the past, children who get a lot from their parents to build a house on become long term residents, raising families, are hardworking and pay their taxes, and as their parents get older will often take care of them as long as possible so they don't have to go away to a nursing home, as I have done myself for my parents. As a solution to this current housing crisis we are experiencing, why not loosen up on some of the restrictions which prevent landowners from having lots severed from their properties so they can allow their children to build a house and have a place to call home, with the added benefit that it would be highly likely they would take care of their aging parents in the future.
