Ontario’s housing shortage has been an escalating problem for provincial leaders. Despite Bill 23 being a bold measure ensuring effective change in the shortest amount of time, I know it doesn’t reflect the desire of the average Ontarian.
There is a pressing need for environmental accountability. Accountability that implores leaders to include indigenous voices and conservation authorities. We must consider the sustainability of long-term resource use and the needs of a growing community created by these residential zoning areas.
The houses created from this project will become homes to generations of Canadians. It isn’t enough to build fast and plan later when we consider the communities you will inadvertently create. Planning community infrastructure and support preemptively will help reduce crime and substance abuse issues in rural areas.
We all want more affordable housing in Ontario. But innovative bills to create houses will not create communities. We need a more detailed plan for the future of these projects so that we will avoid years of growing pains in Ontario.
