The proposed amendments to allow for the swapping out of land in the Greenbelt would cause irreparable harm to the environment. The removal of currently protected natural areas will have disastrous consequences for which the addition of new areas will be of little or no comfort. The entire purpose of the Greenbelt Plan is frustrated and subverted when the ecological integrity of the existing Greenbelt is so directly undermined to advance more greenfield development and urban sprawl. The interests of the develop industry lobby are so clearly being placed ahead of the public’s interest in protecting the precious few remaining ecologically intact lands in the Golden Horseshoe Area and combatting urban sprawl. The protected areas at issue are priceless and once lost are irretrievable. The magnitude of their value is immeasurable compared to any benefits associated with more urban sprawl. I wish to relay, in the strongest of terms, my opposition to the proposed amendments.
