This proposal is without merit and is simply backpedaling by the Premier, along with housing minister Steve Clark, who previously said that he would not touch the Greenbelt.
It has been stated that Ontario is expected to grow by more than two million people by 2031. That is an arbitrary figure that need not be written in stone and indeed, should be reexamined by the Federal government. It makes no sense to receive so many immigrants, when the infrastructure to support them is far from adequate. Our healthcare system is in crisis, education is at risk, inflation is rampant and the list goes on. The hundreds of thousands of immigrants that will arrive, will simply be vying for the same jobs that the hundreds of thousands that came the year before them. As history dictates, many immigrants will not be able to obtain jobs commensurate with their experience and will languish in jobs far below their training / education. That is a fact. While the government may think rampant immigration will solve our excess jobs problem, it will bring far more problems than it will solve. If the Greenbelt is compromised, there will not be as many farms producing food. You can't get that land back after you've built a condo or a housing development on it. If the proposed plan for 50,000 new homes goes through, it will affect not only farmers, but wildlife that will lose their habitat and will create far more societal problems than we already have. It's not just the homes that are being built on green space, but the shopping malls, schools, corner stores and other infrastructure that has to be built nearby to support them. The proposed plan is not responsible growth.
