Opening any part of the greenbelt for development will increase sprawl (since it will be development by definition outside the city limits). It will increase greenhouse gas emissions because people will need to travel for work, shopping, etc. New infrastructure will have to be built, for sewage, power, transportation, etc. Just by being there it will interfere with the purposes for which the greenbelt was set up. It will negatively affect the watershed, eliminate trees, and destroy habitat. Doug Ford was elected saying his government would not appropriate the greenbelt for development. Saying that doing so is necessary for housing is deeply misleading. Development - housing - is needed in the city. What is so clearly necessary is more density, not more sprawl.
