This is unequivocally a bad idea. We have a shortage of housing, not shortage of homes or already developed land than could be densified. Developers needing more space to build extravagantly large homes for the upper class is ridiculous. Without clean water, green space, pollinators, and so much more, our farms will be less productive, people will lack access to green space and clean outdoor recreation, our waters will be polluted, and we will be at increased risk of harm from natural disasters.
Please, don’t set a precedent for favouring profits over environment and the well being of people. The green belt was made for a reason, and the ecologically sensitive areas were chosen for a reason. We cannot allow further encroachment, especially when all new developments aren’t planned with appropriate natural and green spaces, let alone “parks”.
Housing can be addressed in many other ways, and cutting into green belts to build oversized and overpriced single family homes, designed for increased wastefulness in a climate and environmental emergency, is atrocious. Plan cities better, plan communities better, densify appropriately and create outdoor space for all to enjoy.
Absolutely do not allow this to pass. We cannot bring back these spaces once they’re gone.
