Cap and trade was a bold policy that was working to halt the damaging effects of climate change. If this government wishes to replace it, it must come up with something else. We cannot pretend climate change isn't happening.
We need to move away from the false dichotomy of protecting the environment and economic stability. In a world consumed by powerful storms and fires, economic and ecological sustainability are completely interdependent.
I'm very concerned about this bill and I hope the Conservative government will do the right thing for the citizens of Ontario and move instead to further protect our ecosystems.
Lastly, the idea of selling access to our fresh water is deeply worrying. Any short-term gain in revenue will be long overshadowed by the high environmental and economic costs of having to clean up, restore, or perhaps even go to war over our water. This is an issue that transcends politics; it is literally about the very future of our province, its land and citizens.
