As much as housing is a concern, the government should look at options beyond developing the green belt. As the effects of climate change and habitat loss begin to become more apparent (not less), we should focus on developing the parts of Ontario that are already urbanized and devoid of ecology. Green belt sites with low ecological value should be restored, not developed. Our housing crisis should be solved with high quality, contextually moderate intensification (eliminating single-dwelling zoning, increasing condo heights by 3-6 storeys, not 10+) and an increase of pedestrian focused road design and public transportation
