Doug Ford has made many claims, but his actions have betrayed him at every opportunity. Opening up the Greenbelt for development will not do anything to curb the housing crisis - it is a convenient excuse to enrich his cronies. The provinces and municipalities will have to be much braver in their decision-making to tackle housing as an issue. Doug Ford changed Ontario’s slogan from “Yours to Discover” to “Open for Business”. This tacky change is not only completely bereft of identity (it could describe almost any province/city/state on the planet) but it is a perfect encapsulation of Ford’s motivations on every decision. He is not here to help the people of Ontario by improving access to affordable housing - he is simply trying to make more money for himself and his friends. The lands in the Greenbelt are inherently precious. If that’s not convincing, the functions performed by these environments have economic value, and the benefits provided by having wetlands, farmland and watersheds are costly to replicate once they are gone. The Greenbelt does not belong to Doug Ford. He has a weak mandate from the people of Ontario and continues to make short-sighted decisions that will impact us for generations. When we finally run out of resources for him to sell, will he actually begin to govern?
