The greenbelt has been protected thanks to a legislation put in place to prevent urban sprawl and protect sensitive geography by the same government looking to tear it down. The proposal to build over the greenbelt is short-sighted and simply no more than a bandaid solution to the housing crisis. We would be investing money and time into an area where there are no jobs, and far from desirable cities, all while still not addressing the root of the housing problem where it matters most. In the wake of climate change, a growing population and an unstable economy, it is more important than ever to preserve this land in a fashion that we will look back on without regret. It is about protecting the environment, and thus, our domestic food supply as well.

Simply put, we need to build up, not out.

Please consider investing this time, and money into solving current problems that we have within and around our cities rather than on executing this proposal. People will still want to live in and near cities as it's where jobs, families and the Canadian spirit of multiculturalism and promise lives. Building more housing in the greenbelt will not solve the problems plaguing our cities. I encourage the government to focus their energies on growing our cities over destroying nature to build housing in places no one wants to be.
