We cannot keep building outwards infinitely into the land surrounding the GTHA. The Greenbelt is what makes this area liveable. The value of the biodiversity and trees with their carbon capturing technology built-in is saving so much more money and time than we realize right now to fight climate change. The Greenbelt only works if it is protected against all odds. That’s what was promised. That’s it’s purpose of existence. The point of it was to ensure in the face of growing populations and development we would know it would be protected. It should be enshrined in the law. Doug Ford needs to back up. I live in Hamilton where he also reversed the democratic decision by city council to keep the urban boundary (to expand it.) Hamilton is one of the least dense cities I’ve ever lived in. It is actually suspicious to me that he made that decision to expand the urban boundary without going to Hamilton realizing that densifying the city would make the most sense. Then we could have the LRT and more services that Toronto gets to enjoy. All in all, it is so apparent that Doug is in bed with his developer friends. It’s so sad that he’s willing to destroy our beautiful province to do that. There are more sustainable and efficient ways to help with the housing crisis. Take a look at European cities. Maybe not everyone gets a house, but if well built low-rise sustainable affordable and liveable buildings were available that should be what’s being built. No one can even afford what is being proposed.
