I have concerns regarding limiting conservation authority input through proposed changes to the Conservation Authority Act on construction planning near wetlands and conservation areas. This involves taking away the conservation authorities' abilities to weigh in on potential impacts to the environment during the housing planning phase to prevent hazards such as flooding in developments, which could be constructed within buffer zones under the proposed changes and reducing the buffer zone from 120m to 30m. While I support the need for affordable housing and sustainable growth, the cost should not be the preservation of the environment and loss of flood attenuation and ability to be protected from hazards. There is an abundance of land to develop on sustainably, but instead the land is used to profit developers who build unaffordable and unsustainable housing on fertile farmland, which does not mitigate the housing crisis Ontario has been facing.
