The proposed bill will be a detriment to both the local ecology (including a number of federally and provincially listed Endangered species), as well as the role the green belt plays recreationally. Many seek out the green belt to escape the city, to visit the cottage and for exercise, this brings money into the small town economies, helping them subsist. As the bill would greatly reduce the amount of public consultation on development, it would hinder people’s democratic rights over the use of shared land.
To conclude, the green belt is an important green space that needs to be protected. It has value recreationally to users, ecologically to the many Species at Risk found there, and economically, helping local, small town, economies.
