This is a huge step back for heritage in this province. While I understand the housing crisis, more homes faster will create a detriment to Ontario history, Canadian history, Ontario conservation, earth and environment, natural habitats and so much more.
I am a licensed archaeologist in the province of Ontario, and while I believe that the Standards and Guidelines needs to be updated, it’s still important to acknowledge the heritage of the land that is being developed and should not come down to the final decision of someone who does not care about Ontario and Canadian history.
In passing Bill 23, many archaeologists will be out of a job, smaller companies will likely close which will ultimately affect the Ontario economy.
Why is this the only option? Why isn’t there a better compromise? How does this benefit Ontario?
