We should create more housing by building up what we already have, not sprawling into protected areas. Higher density leads to nicer neighbourhoods and lower car dependence, but cutting into the greenbelt (one of Ottawa's greatest features) would not only further take away from something beautiful but would also force whoever is living there to commute long distances. Instead of designating parts of a protected area for development, put pressure on the municipal government of Ottawa to re-designate residential areas that currently only allow single family homes and other low density options so that those zones allow higher density such as multiplexes and low-rise apartment buildings. Developing more of nature is not the solution to our housing crisis; we need to repair the broken system we have, and then if we still need more, we can build satellite cities connected by high-speed public transit.
