I personally and very strongly oppose the decision to develop over Green Belt land.

It is a known fact that the housing crisis is not due to a lack of land. The housing crisis is a result of affordability and access. There are more vacant units than there are homeless people in Ontario.

If this decision is to house our population, it’s not even an effective way of achieving that goal. We need to tighten restrictions on vacant homes, repurpose empty office spaces, kick Airbnb out of our city. We must not allow homes to sit empty waiting for the highest offshore bidder.

And this isn’t even going into the obvious need to maintain our rich and delicate environment. The biodiversity of the green belt is so crucial, especially with the worsening effects of climate change.
Our insect populations have already been plummeting, and our wildlife is in need of protection more need than ever before.

Once the green belt is “open for business” I fear that the time our species will have on this planet will be reduced even more drastically.

My only suggestion is to not develop on our green belt. Keep it protected. Please, I’m begging you.
