The idea that you could “replace” land protected in the green belt by protecting land in a completely different city is not an equal replacement for the people who live in cities whose protected land is being removed. People who live in these cities deserve to have access to nature before there is none left to enjoy. This proposal states that it’s intent is to increase the amount of housing built, however it does not go far enough to outline how it will accomplish building affordable housing in a timely manner, therefore I have no confidence that this intent will be actualized. Not to mention that this proposal goes against what the people of ontario have vocalized, which is protecting the green belt. I believe there are plenty of alternative approaches that the government can take to increase the amount of affordable housing without needing to use the protected land in the green belt.
