We have lived within the greenbelt since I was a child. We have watched development sprawl. Sometimes to the benefit of our communities, sometimes with serious consequences (and driven only with the interest of $$$) . We have watched the populations of song birds change and dwindle. The deer have gone. The bees are fewer each year. The once abundant monarch (now endangered) barely made an appearance in our milkweed field. We made the choice to stop mono cropping our 50 acres. At great cost to us, we are restoring a small piece of the wildlife corridor in our area. We planted 45,000 native trees and shrubs, let the fields wild with milkweed and seeding plants and grasses for the birds, bees and bugs. But is it too late? Will we see the biodiversity return to this area? The health of the waters and the soil return? Our family are making choices daily, for years, to better protect our planet. We work for years, shout, plead, and with one action/decision of destroying more greenbelt, you do more damage than our families and neighborhoods could try to balance within our lifetime, or generations.
KEEP THE PROMISE.
stay out of the greenbelt. Do more, protect MORE land.
I have lived in low income housing my entire life. I have siblings who cannot afford housing and worry. Stop using us as pawns. Stop using the housing crisis to destroy the planet. Find other solutions. Perhaps start with the thousands of empty condos in Toronto and rentals that wealthy investors (I hear many politicians as well) own and build excessive wealth with. Look inward and stop punishing us.
