I do NOT support the planned changes. Building more houses quickly, sprawl, and building on Green Belt land that should be protected does not adequately address any of the concerns or problems that it claims to address. The citizens of Ontario need affordable housing, and building housing quickly and contributing to urban sprawl does not ensure affordability. Urban sprawl through protected Green Belt lands will not only negatively impact the environment (deforestation, pollution, disruption of wildlife habitats, destruction of farm land), but research shows that sprawl negatively impacts public health as well (obesity, respiratory diseases, cancer, etc.). Alternatively, green spaces (the Green Belt) protects the environment and positively impacts public health, as well as providing farming space for growing local food. Ontario needs more apartments, mixed use buildings, high density development in walkable and bikeable cities with easy access to reliable public transit. More homes built faster does not address the housing crisis, and further advances the environmental and health crises. There is already land available for thoughtful and effective development. Development on the Green Belt land will not benefit “all Ontarians” as claimed. It will not address the housing crisis and will only further advance the environmental and health crises already being faced, and the citizens of Ontario will be the ones to suffer the significant negative impacts of these proposed changes.
